The Seeds of Restoration: Our Journey Together
The history of Reto a la Juventud began on January 13, 1978, in Mexico City. Seeing the growing problem of addiction among young people, Gamaliel Cerda, Alejandra MartÃnez, John Swank, and Betty Swank decided to join efforts to go out into the streets, plazas, and institutions to provide support and rescue those in need. After a year of steady work and serving so many people, they realized it was time to formalize this work.

In 1979, the project extended its reach to Ciudad Juárez, Chihuahua. Mrs. Soad Elena D. Chávez de Porras voluntarily visited women in the local juvenile detention center, which led to inviting the team from the Federal District to provide a training seminar for those who wished to address the same situation in the city. That same year, the local group decided to formally join Reto a la Juventud México. With the support of Engineer José Alberto Villasana Lyon—father of a young person served by the institution and deeply grateful for the service received—Gamaliel Cerda ElÃas began researching the best way to legally establish the organization.
Â
The legal founding of Reto a la Juventud México became a reality on January 15, 1988.

Throughout all these years, thanks to this early effort and the unconditional commitment to the community, we have had the privilege of accompanying and transforming the lives of thousands of men and women who have sought a new opportunity.
